Birth of Das Mahavidyas as per Brihat Dharma Purana

The mythology of how the 10 forms of Goddess appeared is described in the Brihat Dharma Purana. Sati (a form of Goddess Parvati) is the consort of Lord Shiva and the daughter of Daksha. One day Daksha organizes Yagna (fire ritual) at home but he invites all but does not invite Sati and Shiva for Yagna. Daksha was trying to insult him. Sati heard about yajna from Narad Muni. She requests Shivas permission to attend the yajna, saying that a daughter did not need an invitation from her father. Shiva said that even if Sati attended the yajna, the fruit of the sacrifice would not be auspicious. Therefore he asked Sati not to attend the yajna.

She thought that Shiva was treating her as an ignorant lady. So she assumed different forms to show Shiva who she is. Her anger transformed her into ten Mahavidya of ten directions. These Goddesses together subdued Shivas resistance and thus Sati left to attend the sacrifice ritual. These ten forms of Goddess are known as the Das Mahavidyas. Each form has her own name, story, quality, and mantras. The Dus Mahavidyas are referred to as the Great Goddess of Wisdom and She opens the inner truths.

Significance of Dus Mahavidya Puja

Dus Mahavidya are known as the goddess of knowledge & wisdom. All these Godesses are different forms of Adya Ma Shakti (Mother) who remains ever eager to bestow all favours upon devotees. How do you ensure that the correct number of Japas is being really done by the priests for you or not?

Shaligram Shala puja and Yajna services ensure that each priest takes a Sankalp before starting the puja with betel leaf, betel nut, flower and small qty. of rice. Since all priests are Kashi trained and are initiated, hence once the Sankalpa is taken individually by them, they are bound to complete the stated number Japas positively. In the case of most of the other websites doing pujas, normally all pundits avoid taking such kind of Sankalp and there is a strong likelihood that they do not complete the stated Japa. Hence the positive effect of the puja will not be experienced by the devotee.
