Gauri Vrat, Gauri Vrat Katha, Vrat for Marriage, Gauri Pooja Vidhi

Compared to all festivals related to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Gauri Vrat, is vital of all and is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. ‘Gauri’ is one of the many names of Parvati and it means ‘brilliantly fair’. Gauri Vrat is largely celebrated in the state of Gujarat, along with other western parts of India. The vrat is specifically for unmarried girls to get blessed for having a husband like Lord Shiva. However, many married women to observe this vrat for the well-being of their husbands and family.

Gauri Vrat happens on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi and ends after five days on Purnima. In Gujarat, it is called as Morakat Vrat, along with names likes Jaya Parvati Vrat, Gauri Vrat observed for a period of five days. However, many women observe this vrat for a period of five or seven years.

What Happens During This Vrat? How to Celebrate Gauri Vrat?

Gauri Vrat is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. It is celebrated in the month of Ashada as per the Gujarati calendar. The Vrat starts from the Ashada Ekadashi or Dev Shayani Ekadashi and is continued till Guru Purnima or Ashad Purnima. In western part of the India, especially in Gujarat, it called as Panchuka or Gauri Panchak.

While observing this vrat, women strictly abstain themselves from consuming vegetables, salt and tomatoes. It is believed that by following this method, one is purified internally.

On the first day of vrat, the family members especially women needs to plant Javara or the wheat seeds in a pot placed nearby in the temple room. A necklace made of cotton wool is prepared, decorated with vermillion.

The wheat seeds are regularly watered in the pot, until the last day of the final puja, performed at the temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. On this day, women break the Vrat by consuming food items made of wheat. Next day, i.e. on sixth day, they take early bath and plant the Javara in their garden.

It considered highly auspicious for women to perform Mahagauri Puja during this Vrat. In addition, on the eight day of Navratri, the Devi is worshipped.

Gauri Vrat Story, Legend of Jaya Parvati Vrat

Gauri Vrat is considered one of the highly auspicious ritual for unmarried women. As per the legend, a Brahmin couple who were the devotees of Lord Shiva were blessed with everything, except child. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva blessed them and asked to worship his Linga in the forest. The linga was never worshipped before. Lord Shiva said, if they worship it, they would be get what they desire.

They headed to the forest, to worship the Linga. One day, the husband went out to get some fruits for the Lingam. However, even after for hours, he did not returned which made his wife anxious about it and was very unaware that a snake bite him.

She started praying for her lost husband. Looking at her devotion towards her lost husband, Lord Shiva was pleased and brought him back to life. After this event, the couple started worshipping the Linga whole-heartedly and were blessed with a baby boy.
