Apara Ekadashi (May 18, 2020 Monday) is the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight of moon) of Jyeshtha month (June-July). In Apar Ekadashi the word apar means limitless. People believed that by observing Apara Ekadashi, one can have all their misgivings washed away by the limitless blessings of the Lord Vishnu. It is an important day especially for the Vaishnavas and for the devotees of Lord Vishnu or Krishna. This puja ritual is considered most sacred to execute the spiritual activities of worshippers. Apara Ekadashi is called Hari-Vasara (the auspicious day of Lord Vishnu). Observing fast on this day purifies the mind, body, heart and soul.

Importance of Ekadashi/ Significance of Ekadashi

The importance of this puja ritual is mentioned in the sacred texts of Skanda Purana and Padma Purana. This Vrat is performed by both Vaishnavas and the Non-Vaishnava community. One who is going to perform this Vrat should keep refrain from consuming cereals, wheat, spices and most vegetables. The preparation for Ekadashi Vrat and Katha begins on Dashami (10th day), or the day before Ekadashi. During this ritual, prayers and mantras are chanted, and puja offered in praise of Lord Maha Vishnu to invoke his blessings for all-round prosperity. Worshippers can also sing Aartis, narrate Ekadashi Vrata Katha (Ekadashi story) and give spiritual sermons on the eve of Ekadashi.

Ekadashi Vrat and Katha

The Ekadashi Vrat and Katha is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is an auspicious day and according to the traditional Hindu calendar (eleventh day of every lunar fortnight). Ekadashi occurs twice a month, once during Shukla Paksha and the other during Krishna Paksha. Fasting on Ekadashi or Ekadashi Vrat is considered highly auspicious. People believed that performing fast on this auspicious day helped in redemption of sins and in attaining Moksha. You can perform this fast without water (Nirjala Upvas), with water and fruits depending upon one preference.
