Vat Purnima is a traditional festival celebrated across India in different states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana. Vat Purnima is celebrated as Vat Savitri Vrat (Savitri Brata) by the married women of Odisha (India) and Mithila region (India & Nepal). It is celebrated on Amavasya (no moon day) in the month of Jyeshtha. Vat Purnima is also known as Vat Savitri Purnima, Wat Purnima, Pournima Chavan or Sabitri Uwaans. As per the Hindu lunar calendar, traditional festivals of Amanta and Purnimanta occur on the same day. The northern parts of India such as Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Punjab & Uttar Pradesh go in accordance with Purnimanta Calendar whereas the southern parts follow Amanta Calendar.

All About Vat Savitri Vrat & Katha

Performing this Vrat bestows good fortune, children and fulfils other wishes of ladies. Prayers and pujas of this ritual are dedicated to Vat Vriksha (Banyan Tree) and Savitri. During Vat Savitri Puja all the married women tie sacred threads around the bark of the banyan tree and worship the tree for the prosperous life & longevity of their husbands. This puja ritual originated from the famous Savitri Satyavan legend in the Mahabharata (the epic of Kurukshetra war). According to Hindu mythology, the Banyan tree reflects the existence of trinity which are Lord Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh. It is believed that Lord Brahma lives in the root of this tree, Lord Vishnu lives in the middle and Lord Mahesh lives in the top part of the Banyan tree. Thus performing the puja of the Banyan tree and listening to the legends related to Vat Savitri fast it truly fulfils all wishes and is considered abundantly fruitful.

As per the Skanda Purana and the Bhavishyottara Purana, this Vrat (fast) is performed on every Poornima of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha (June) month of Hindu calendar. Vat Savitri is a Hindi name which is a combination of two words Vat and Savitri where Vat means Banyan Tree and Savitri means a form of Goddess (Devi). This Vrat or fast is dedicated to Savitri who saved her husband named Satyavan from being taken by the death god Yamraj. Vata Savitri Amavasya is an auspicious day and married women perform fast on this day. People consider performing Vat Savitri Puja very auspicious and blessed.
