The word Deepavali is formed of two words - Deepa meaning Light and Avali meaning a Row. It means a row of lights and the spiritual meaning is “the awareness of the inner light”. Perform Deepavali - Diwali Puja & Katha on the auspicious occasion of Deepavali (Diwali). It is a festival of lights. Diwali is celebrated to destroy the dark shadows and evil around us. The festival is celebrating the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali celebrates this through festive lights, colors, flowers, sharing of sweets, fireworks and worship. While the story behind Deepavali differs from region to region, the essence is the same. Laxmi Puja comes on Amavasya of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin (October / November). On this day we worship Goddess Laxmi - the goddess of prosperity and wealth. This is the main event on Diwali. In Diwali puja, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Kubera and Goddess Saraswati are worshipped together.

Legends and stories associated with Diwali

Return of Ram to Ayodhya

Maryada Purushottam Ram returned to Ayodhya with brother Laxman and wife Janak Nandini Sita after spending 14 years of exile (वनवास) and killing the Demon Ravana. On this occasion, the people of Ayodhya welcomed him with great joy and gaiety. People lit lamps and decorated the entire Ayodhya with rows of Diyas (earthen clay pots) on the dark night of Amavasya. Lord Ramas procession was carried out with elephant horse and band instruments, this procession passed through the major streets of the city. Sweets were distributed and a grand festival was held in the honor of Ram. On this day, people celebrate Diwali.

The day is celebrated to spread across the message of the ultimate victory of good over evil, victory of truth over a lie, light over darkness and so Deepavali is also known as the festival of lights. The thought behind lighting candles and fireworks on the day of Diwali is to spread the light of positivity in the world, despite the darkness of negativity. Celebrating the festival of Diwali in its true essence is not only to have fun but also to remove all the negative thoughts along with the smoke of fireworks.

The Killing of Narakasura

The two days before Diwali Killing of Narakasura is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdasi. The Narakasura, an evil demon who created havoc, killed by Lord Krishnas wife Satyabhama. This happened in the Dwapar Yuga during this time of Lord Krishnas provokes his wife Satyabhama to kill Narakasura by pretending to be harmed by the demon Narakasura. Narakasura can only be killed by his mother, Satyabhama (believed to be an Avatar of Bhudevi – Narakasuras mother). Before Narakasuras death, he asked a boon from his mother, that everyone should celebrate his death with colorful light.

Austerities of Shakti - Kedar Gauri Vrat

Kedar Gauri Vrat - This Hindu festival coincides with the main day of Diwali for Lakshmi Puja. It is a 21-day fasting ritual that begins on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Shukla Paksha in the Tamil month of Portuguese and ends on the main day of Diwali i.e. Amavasya.

This fast was performed by Goddess Parvati. A follower of Lord Shiva left Parvati and trusted Shiva and prayed. In return, he enraged the goddess. She prayed to sage Gautama for a solution to become an integral part of Shivas body. Sage Gautama advised her to observe a strict Kedar Vrat for 21 days with full devotion. Pleased by this, Lord Shiva gave Goddess Parvati her left part and this form is known as Ardhanarishwara. From that day on, this day began to be celebrated as Kedar Gauri Vrat because Goddess Gauri herself fasted to please Lord Shiva. Deepavali is the completion day of this austerity. This is the day Lord Shiva accepted Goddess Parvati into the left half of the form and appeared as Ardhanarishvara. The devotees observe this 21 days Vrata by making a Kalasha with 21 threads on it and 21 types of offerings for 35 days. The final day is celebrated as Kedhara Gauri Vrata.

Birth of Lakshmi from the churning of the ocean

A total of 14 types of gems etc. were generated from the sea churning. This gem was divided between the Suras (devas) and the Asuras. First, the Halahal (Vish) venom came out, then the Kamadhenu cow, Uccheshwara horse, Airavat elephant, Kaustubh Mani, Kalpvriksha, Apsara named Rambha, Mahalakshmi came out after Apsara. It is said that gold came out in the form of Goddess Lakshmi which Lord Vishnu took. This was followed by a Varuni, then the moon, then the tree of Parijat, then the Panchajanya conch, the Dhanvantari Vaidya (medicine) and finally the Amrit nectar.

Lakshmi was born during Samudra Manthan. Lakshmi of Samudra Manthan is considered the goddess of wealth. He has a Kalash full of gold in his hand. Lakshmiji keeps raining wealth through this Kalash. Her vehicle is considered a white elephant. Lakshmi means Sri and the origin of prosperity. Some people associate it with gold (gold), but some consider it a goddess. Lakshmi, born from the churning of the ocean, is called Kamala, the last of the Dus Mahavidyas.

Krishna defeating Indra (Bali Pratipada or Govardhan Puja (Annakut Puja))

Bali Pratipada is celebrated a day after the main Diwali. The day is generally known by the Hindus as Lord Krishna had defeated the God Indra. People celebrate Govardhan Puja by creating the food of cereals like wheat, rice, curry of gram flour and leafy vegetables so as to offer to the Hindu Lord avatar.
Govardhan puja is widely known to commemorate the history of Govardhan Hills through the lives of the many folks who were saved from the crucial rain. Its thought that the people of Gokul were used to worshiping God Indra (God of rain). However, Lord Krishna told People in Gokul to all worship the Govardhan Parbat or Annakut hill as hes the real God who is nurturing and saving your lives. Hence, they started worshiping Govardhan mountain within the place of God Indra. By seeing this, Lord Indra became angry and began descending an excessive amount of within the Gokul. Finally, Lord Krishna had saved their lives by lifting the Govardhan hill at his little finger and covered the people of Gokul under that. In this manner, proud Indra had been defeated by the Lord Vishnu avatar. Now, the day is known as Govardhan Puja to offer homage to the Govardhan Parbat. The day is also celebrated as Padva or Bali Pratipada within Maharashtra because the demon King Bali was defeated and pushed to Patal Loka by the Lord Vishnu in the Vamana avatar.

How do you ensure that the correct number of Japas is being really done by the priests for you or not?

Shaligram Shala puja and Yajna services ensure that each priest takes a Sankalp before starting the puja with betel leaf, betel nut, flower and small qty. of rice. Since all priests are Kashi trained and are initiated, hence once the Sankalpa is taken individually by them, they are bound to complete the stated number Japas positively. In the case of most of the other websites doing pujas, normally all pundits avoid taking such kind of Sankalp and there is a strong likelihood that they do not complete the stated Japa. Hence the positive effect of the puja will not be experienced by the devotee.
