The name Lakshmi-Narayana is jointly taken as a couple for the Hindu god, Vishnu or Narayana, and his consort Bhagwati Lakshmi. They reside in Vaikuntha. According to the ancient legend, once Maharshi Bhrigu came to Vaikuntha and he laid a kick on the chest of Narayana lying in Yoga Nidra on the rest of the bed. Narayana immediately took hold of Bhrigus feet and started asking if there was any injury to the Rishivar foot. But Goddess Lakshmi did not like this behavior of Bhrigu Rishi and she became angry with Vishnu. The anger was about why God did not punish Bhrigu Rishi. In displeasure, Goddess Lakshmi left Vaikuntha. When Lord Narayana started searching for Goddess Lakshmi, it was found out that Goddess was reborn on earth as a girl named Padmavati. Lord Narayana also changed his form as Venkatesh and reached Padmavati. God proposed in front of Padmavati as Goddess accepted.

Vishnu Ji took a lot of money from Lord Kubera, considering Lord Shiva and Brahma Ji as witnesses to solve the problem of money for the marriage. This debt led to the marriage of Narayanan Venkatesh avatar and Padmavati as Goddess Lakshmi, which was an unprecedented marriage. After marriage, Lord started living on the hills of Tirumala, while taking a loan from Kubera, God promised that by the end of Kali Yuga, he will repay all his debt. He will continue to repay the loan until his debt ends. Due to this belief of being immersed in the debt of God, devotees offer a huge amount of wealth so that God can become debt-free.
