The 8th form of Durga Mata is Mahagauri ( महागौरी) and worshipped on the eighth day of Navaratri. Goddess Mahagauri has the power to satisfy all the wishes of her devotees. Worshiper of the goddess gets relief from all the sufferings in life. The name Mahagauri is a combination of two words Maha means great and Gauri means white i.e. means extremely white in color and very beautiful. Also, one who is clean and bright like a ray of lightning. Her beauty glows like the White Pearl. She is also known as Annapurna, Aishwarya Pradayini, Chaitanyamayi.

Mahagauri is usually described with four hands, the hands holding a trident, lotus, and drum, while the fourth is in a blessing pose. The lotus is sometimes replaced with a rosary. She rides a white bull or Lion and is usually shown wearing white clothes. According to the Puranas, their glory would brighten the whole world. She denotes peace and endurance. On the 8th day of Navratri Ashtami Yagna and Havan are performed. Pooja is very fruitful, especially for unmarried girls to get the desired husbands and married women to enjoy a peaceful, harmonious and long married life. She directs all nine planets.

Significance of Maha Gauri | Why Worship Maha Gauri

As per the Durga Saptashati, demons Shumbha Nishumbha defeated Devatas. These demons could only be killed by a female child of Parvati. Hence, Bramha advises Shiva therefore Shiva used his magical-power to turn Parvatis skin black, giving Parvati the epithet "Kali" avatar. The "Kali" means "death", so Parvati was teased. Parvati was agitated by this teasing, to get her fair complexion back she penances to Brahma. She succeeded in her penance and was directed by Brahma to take a bath in the Mansarovar River in Himalaya. As she took a bath, her dark skin separated from her and took the form of a female called Kaushiki, being born from the skin of Parvati. As a result, Parvati got her white fair glow back, and so she gained the name "Mahagauri".

According to this legend, in order to get Lord Shiva as a husband, her body turns black after the harsh penance of the goddess. Pleased with the penance of the goddess, God accepts them and rinses her body with Ganges water. Then the goddess becomes extremely radiant Gaur varna like electricity and since then she was named Gauri.

Since all priests are Kashi trained and are initiated, hence once the Sankalpa is taken individually by them, they are bound to complete the stated number Japas positively.
