Story of Shani Dev | Who is Lord Shani

But according to the Skandpurans Kashi Khand about Shani Dev, Shani Dev was born with the union of Suryadev (lord Sun) and Chhaya (shadow). For this, she created a Shadow with her penance. She went to her fathers house, giving responsibility to Suryadev and her children to Shadow named Chhaya.

When Sandhya revealed her problem to his father, he became very angry and rebuked the Sandhya and sent her back. She did not return to her husbands house, instead, she went to the forest. The Sun God did not realize all these things. Due to the shadow form of Sandhya living with Surya Dev, he did not have any problem with the asceticism of Suryadev and after some time the three children named Shani dev, Manu and Bhadra were born with the union of Suryadev and Shadow (Chhaya).

According to another legend, Shani Dev was born under the guardianship of Maharishi Kashyapa. Shadow was devoted to Shiva. When Shani dev was in Chhayas womb, Chhaya did such a severe penance of Lord Shiva that she could not even remember eating and drinking. Due to hunger and thirst, Sun and heat, Shani inside her womb also get affected growing in the womb of shadow and his color became black.

When Shani Dev was born, seeing the color, Suryadev doubted the shadow and insulted her, saying that it could not be his son. The power of the mothers penance had come in Shani Dev as well. He got angry and saw his father Suryadev when Suryadev became absolutely black, his horses stopped moving. Being upset, Suryadev had to take shelter at Lord Shiva and Shiva made him realize his mistake. Lord Sun apologized for his mistake, after which he regained his true form again. But the relationship between father and son deteriorated and that could not improve again. Even today, Shani dev is considered a rebel of his father Sun.
