Legend Of Dhanteras
Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar to liberate the gods from the fear of King Bali and reached the Yagna (sacrificial fire) of King Bali. Shukracharya recognized Lord Vishnu as Vamana and urged King Bali to deny anything Vaman asked for. Bali did not listen to Shukracharya. King Bali started taking pledge by taking water from the kamandal to donate three steps lands sought by Vamana. Shukracharya entered King Balis kamandala in miniature form to prevent him from donating. Due to this, the passage of water from the kamandal was closed. Vamana understood the tricks of Lord Shukracharya. Lord Vamana placed Kusha in his hand in the Kamandal so that one eye of Shukracharya exploded. Shukracharya came out of the kamandal. After this, Bali pledged to donate three steps of land. Then Lord Vamana measured the entire earth with one foot and Swargaloka (space) with the second step. Having no place to keep the third step, Bali placed his head at the feet of the Lord Vamana. He lost everything in donation. In this way, the Gods were freed from the fear of Bali and the wealth which the Bali had snatched away from the Gods got many times more wealth. On this occasion, the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated.Yama Deepak On Dhanteras
Once, while taking the life of King Hemas Bramhachari son, Yamdutas heart was also troubled upon hearing the lamentation of his newly married wife, but according to the law, Yamduta could not do anything by wishing. A Yamduta, then asked Yamraj if there was any way to avoid premature death. Answering this, Yama Devta said that the person who keeps a lamp in the south direction in the name of Yama (Yama Deepak) on the evening of Dhanteras, does not die prematurely. According to this belief, in the evening of Dhanteras, people keep a lamp in the aangan (courtyard) in the name of Yama Devta. What to buy on Dhanteras?
